Carpentry is a valuable skill and skilled woodworkers can make a decent living in almost any part of the world. Many of the students have shown a tremendous artistic talent which they may never have discovered had they not had the opportunity develop their skills. Our students are creating an amazing variety of beautiful and practical products; from hand turned pens to intricate intarsias, from practical household furniture like bedside tables, stools and entertainment centers, to beautiful decorative crosses cutout by hand on the scroll saws. Beside the practical uses to developing these skills, it gives an immense boost to their self-esteem. As they design, create and sell their products, see their artistic talents blossom and express their creativity expressed through woodworking, they regain the self worth that many of them lost through the abuse they suffered. The orphanage Hogar Rafael Ayau has a well equipped workshop setup by Mr. Alan T. Russell, President of the Liberty Fund. Tim assists with teaching weekly classes to the teenage girls who live in the home, instructing in the proper use of the equipment, joining, planing and cutting the rough cut wood so it can be used, assisting with projects on the Shopbot CNC router and many other tasks. He also helps with the 1-2 week carpentry workshops Mr. Alan Russell holds frequently throughout the year. We are currently in the process of setting up another carpentry workshop at the orphanage Fundaninos, we have some donated equipment that was obtained by Don Livingston of Computers for Hope in addition to Tims old carpentry equipment. |
