Teaching English was what inspired us focus our efforts on providing educational and vocational training to disadvantaged children in Guatemala. Over four years ago we were delivering donated food to the orphanage "Brazos de Amor" and noticed that the children didn't have much to do in the afternoons. The director was thrilled when we offered to start giving them classes. When we saw how eager they were to learn and realized what a need there was to help these children in a lasting way, we started to focus more of our efforts on teaching and less on providing humanitarian aid. We use the Rosetta Stone English language software and a projector to give English classes, the children learn very well with the audio visual presentation and the classes are reinforced with English computer games. One of the primary reason we teach English is that it is dominant international language. Speaking English can help bridge the gap between the lower, middle and upper classes. This is especially true in less developed countries where discrimination and racism are common. English literacy can provide better employment opportunities and higher salaries, which translates into a better quality of life. Most of the information on the internet is in English and being able to access it will open up a whole new world to these children. We currently teach weekly classes to the children at the orphanage Fundaninos in San Jose Pinula as well as at a small school for street children in zone 13 of Guatemala City. |
